Inspiration Monday and Author's PIE!

Everyone get through their Monday alive?? I did.. and surprisingly, it was a pretty good day! So to keep with the good, happy feelings.. I am linking up with Dana from Fun in 1st Grade for her Inspiration Monday Linky! Here is a quote that I need to read often to remind myself to not be so hard on ME and give myself a break once in a while! It definitely inspires me to just be me and live in the moment =)

Head on over to Fun in 1st Grade to share what inspires you! =)

So today I worked on Author's Purpose in Reader's Workshop with my 3rd graders. We discussed P.I.E. (Persuade, Inform & Entertain) and made an anchor chart to go with it. Here's our chart (I got the idea from Pinterest HERE, however there is no original source.. but whoever shared it, thank you!):
After the students read independently, I had them fill out a post-it note with their name, book title, author and what they thought the author's purpose was. Then the each came up to the board and stuck it onto our chart (and yes, I added the pie picture & other things after the kids left!).
Tomorrow, we will be sorting through different genres of books and deciding what the author's purpose is for each genre. I wrote 30 genres on index cards and tomorrow I will hand them out and have the kids put them on the board under the purpose they think it belongs. There's a bunch of genres we haven't discussed yet, so I'm sure we will have a lot to talk about!

Here are some great *freebies* that I am using this week to practice deciding on an Author's Purpose:
I love this activity from the wonderful Angelia at Extra Special Teaching. It includes passages that the students have to read, cut out and glue in the correct spots. Click on the pic to grab your own copy!
I also love this packet from Ginger Snaps! It includes a couple worksheets and 3 sticky note templates with P.I.E. for your students to use during independent writing.. love it!

I'm looking forward doing these activities with the kiddos this week.. plus all of the fun Read Across America activities! Today we wore red, white and black for The Cat in the Hat =)

Don't forget, there are two seriously awesome giveaways going on, make sure you enter before it's too late! Click on the pics below to head on over to these wonderful teachers' blogs. You can even enter Alyssa's giveaway for the 3rd grade prize pack right here!

  1. I love using the "PIE" acronym for author's purpose. It really seems to click with the kids. I think I will add your post-it idea next time I teach author's purpose.
